Authorship Policies
Who qualifies as an author, how contributions are declared, and how authorship issues are handled, following COPE. Click a section to open it.
01Who is an author▾
Neo Civic Education follows the COPE Core Practice on authorship and contributorship. A person is listed as an author only if all of these are true:
1. They made a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the work, or to the collection, analysis, or interpretation of the data.
2. They drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important intellectual content.
3. They approved the final version, including any revision, and agree to be accountable for all parts of the work.
4. They can say which part of the work they are responsible for, and can identify who is responsible for the other parts.
02Contributors who are not authors▾
People who helped but do not meet these criteria, for example for technical help, language help, general supervision, or funding, are named in the Acknowledgements, with their permission. The Acknowledgements appear only in the manuscript with author details, not in the anonymous manuscript. General supervision, a senior position, funding, or routine data collection does not alone justify authorship.
03Contributions and identity▾
— Each author’s role is described in the Author Contributions statement, using the CRediT taxonomy.
— Authors are listed in the manuscript with author details, in the agreed order, with their affiliations and institutional emails. The anonymous manuscript carries no author details.
— Every author gives an ORCID iD in the manuscript with author details and in the submission metadata, as a full https://orcid.org/ link.
— The author list is final at submission. See Authorship Changes and Disputes for later changes.
04The corresponding author▾
— Communicates with the journal and is responsible for accurate author details.
— Confirms that all authors have approved the submission, and completes and signs the Author Declaration Form for all authors. The corresponding author may sign for the co-authors only if every co-author has agreed in writing.
— Replies to the editors in good time on behalf of all authors.
— The role does not mean that this author contributed more than the others.
05Not accepted▾
— Guest or gift authorship: naming a person who did not contribute, for example to add prestige or to return a favour.
— Ghost authorship: leaving out a person who did contribute and meets the criteria.
— Adding or removing authors to influence the review, or without the agreement of those concerned.
— Listing an AI tool as an author. AI tools cannot take responsibility for the work, so they are not authors. Any use of such tools is disclosed in the Declaration of Generative AI Use. See the Generative AI Policy.
06Problems and disputes▾
Changes to authorship after submission and disputes between authors are handled as described in Authorship Changes and Disputes. Suspected authorship misconduct is handled under Research Misconduct.
