02Grounds for an appeal▾
— A factual or technical error in the assessment, for example a reviewer misread the methods or the data.
— A misunderstanding of the manuscript’s argument or contribution that can be shown point by point.
— Evidence of bias, conflict of interest, or unprofessional conduct by a reviewer or editor.
— A failure to follow the journal’s published Peer Review Process.
03What is not a ground for appeal▾
— Disagreement with the decision without specific reasons.
— Rejection at initial screening because the manuscript is outside the Focus and Scope, does not follow the Author Guidelines, or exceeds the similarity limits.
— A request to be judged against other published articles.
— Pressure, repeated messages, or offers of payment, which are treated as a breach of Publication Ethics.
04How to appeal▾
1. Email the Editor-in-Chief with the subject line “Appeal – [manuscript ID]” within 30 days of the decision.
2. Explain clearly why the decision should be reconsidered, and respond point by point to the reviewers’ and editor’s comments.
3. Attach any new evidence, data, or a revised manuscript that addresses the concerns.
4. Do not submit the manuscript to another journal while the appeal is being considered.
05How appeals are handled▾
1. The Editor-in-Chief acknowledges the appeal within 7 working days and assigns it to an editor who was not involved in the original decision and has no conflict of interest.
2. The editor reviews the manuscript, the reports, the decision, and the appeal, and may consult a member of the editorial board or invite an additional independent reviewer.
3. The editor recommends one of three outcomes: uphold the decision, invite a revision, or send the manuscript for further review.
4. The Editor-in-Chief informs the author of the outcome and the reasons. If the original decision was made by the Editor-in-Chief, the appeal is decided by another senior editor.
5. The decision on an appeal is final. Each manuscript may be appealed once.
06Complaints about the process▾
Complaints about how a manuscript or an appeal was handled, rather than about the decision itself, are dealt with under the Complaints Policy. Concerns about the Editor-in-Chief go to the publisher, as described there.
